RedAction PDF Tool is distributed exclusively through the Microsoft Store as an MSIX package. Installation, updates, and uninstallation are all managed by the Microsoft Store on your device.
If your organisation restricts Microsoft Store access, an IT administrator may need to approve access to the Store or use its own approved software-deployment process. RedAction is supplied through Microsoft Store; do not download it from unofficial sources.
Full Access is a one-time durable add-on. It is GBP 14.99 in the UK; Microsoft Store shows the final local price, currency and any applicable taxes. Purchase it using the Buy Full Access button inside the Microsoft Store-installed application. The add-on is not a separate application and is not intended to be found through Store search.
A directly downloaded or sideloaded test package may not have access to production Microsoft Store checkout. Purchasing should be tested with the package installed through the Microsoft Store or the Partner Center testing route.
Updates are delivered automatically through the Microsoft Store. When a new version is published, the Store will download and apply the update in the background. You do not need to uninstall the previous version first.
To check for updates manually, open the Microsoft Store, go to Library, and click Get updates.
To remove RedAction PDF Tool from your device:
Alternatively, right-click RedAction PDF Tool in the Start menu and select Uninstall.
Uninstalling the app does not delete files you have already saved to your
Documents\RedAction\ folder. You may delete that folder manually if you
no longer need those files.
When RedAction PDF Tool is installed or updated via the Microsoft Store, Windows returns
standard MSIX deployment result codes. These are relevant for IT administrators using
MDM tools such as Microsoft Intune or Windows Package Manager (winget).

Core document processing normally takes place on your Windows device, and source documents are not intentionally uploaded to Beartalk. Microsoft Store services may be used for installation, updates, purchases and entitlement checks. Files saved in a cloud-synchronised folder may be processed by the user's chosen synchronisation, backup, security or operating-system services.
Redacted PDFs are saved to Documents\RedAction\ with the file name RedAction_<original name>.pdf. You can use the Review & Export tab to access, preview, confirm, or delete them, and to export as a ZIP or merge into one document.
The requester's name and any optional details you mark as "keep visible" are never redacted. Only other people's personal data is blacked out.
Yes. Enable Force OCR in the redaction settings. RedAction uses the Windows built-in OCR engine (Windows.Media.Ocr) — no third-party software is required. Note that OCR processing takes longer than text-based PDFs.
Yes. RedAction permanently removes the underlying text from the PDF file and fills the area with a solid black box. The redacted text cannot be recovered by copying, searching, or inspecting the file.
RedAction is designed to assist with FOI, EIR, and DSAR disclosure workflows. Automated redaction is an aid only — you must always review every output before disclosure. RedAction does not provide legal advice. You remain the data controller and are responsible for ensuring disclosure is lawful.
RedAction detects: full names (from an extensive name list), email addresses, phone numbers, National Insurance numbers, NHS numbers, dates of birth, UK postcodes, reference and order numbers, driving licence numbers, passport numbers, bank account numbers, sort codes, IBANs, vehicle registration plates, IP addresses, and credit/debit card numbers.
Use the manual search in the review screen to find and redact missed text, or use the draw-a-box tool to manually cover any area on any page. Automated redaction is an aid only and may not catch every instance, especially in unusual formatting or handwritten text.
